Rear Admiral LV Sarat Babu completed his schooling at Sainik School, Korukonda, in Vizianagaram Dist (AP). He was commissioned into the Indian Navy in June 1981 and thereafter served in the navy for more than three and a half decades in various capacities till Dec-2015.
He is a Post Graduate from Madras University in Strategic Studies Discipline & an MPhil in Defence and management from Indoor University.
He is a qualified Submariner and served onboard various submarines for over 15 years including commanding two front line submarines, INS SHISHUMAR & INS SHANKUL. He also has the privilege of being a captain of three front line Guided Missile Destroyers namely, INS RANVIR, INS RANA and INS DELHI.
For his distinguished service in the Navy, he was awarded the “Nao Sena” Medal and thereafter promoted to Rank of Rear Admiral in 2009. A few of his notable staff & Operational tenures include:
Chief Staff Officer (Operations) at Eastern Naval Command.
Adviser to Govt Of India on offshore Defence and security
Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Submarines) at Ministry of Defence, Govt. of India.
Chief Instructor at Indian Naval Academy.
During his service in the Navy, he was involved in Kargil Operations, LTTE operations, Maritime Disaster Relief operations to neighboring countries, overseas deployments and so on.
He took premature retirement from the Navy in December-2015 and was selected to assume charge as Chairman & Managing Director of Hindustan Shipyard Ltd on 05th January 2016. During his five years tenure as chairman & MD of HSL, the Shipyard posted operating and net profits continuously for all the five years after being a perennially loss making Shipyard for more than Five Decades. Further all performance indices of the Shipyard have shown remarkable improvement during his tenure. He Superannuated as CMD, HSL on 31st August 2020.
The Admiral is married to Ms. Vijaya Lakshmi and they have two children Pradeep & Sandeep.
